Every year, thousands of tourists flock to our area to enjoy the beauty of fall. The air turns crisp and surrounding farms start to harvest the fruits of a long, hot summer. It’s a perfect time to make the most of Charleston’s culture and celebrate the season! These are a few of our favorite fall activities waiting for you right outside your Charleston apartment.
You may or may not realize that Cornhole is a very competitive sport, fostering talent across all ages and skill levels and offering big prizes. The American Cornhole Organization Charleston Major is the perfect opportunity to experience world class cornhole competition. Get to know this unique sport (or sign up and try for the grand prize yourself to compete for cash prizes).
It’s always a good time to stop by Books and Brews, so welcome the new season at the Hello Fall Party on September 21st. Try yummy seasonal brews like the Weihenstephaner Festbier, Oktoberfest, pumpkin beers, and delicious ciders while decorating pumpkins and enjoying games on the patio. Welcome the cooler, crisper air and munch on apple and pumpkin pie, pretzels with apple butter, and homemade cinnamon rolls. This is what fall is all about!
Our area was once the home of thriving salt production, and the 3rd Annual BB&T Malden Salt Fest on September 28th is a great way to learn all about our past and celebrate all that Charleston has to offer today. Food vendors, artisans, musicians, and lecturers will celebrate the history of the Kanawha Valley and the influence of the salt industry in our area over time. Contributors from across Appalachia will be on hand to produce an old-fashioned parade, live music, cake walks, and tours of the salt-works – a great event for the whole family!
If fall weather makes you want to curl up with a good book, save the date for the West Virginia Book Festival, October 4-5. Meet authors and listen to their take on the process of writing some of your favorite reads. Workshops, lectures, activities for the kids, and a storybook costume parade make this an event the whole family can enjoy. Bookworms will want to shop the huge used book sale for great deals on books, movies, music CDs and more.
As fall starts to paint the trees with color, many of us start our holiday shopping. Celebrate fall with traditional hay rides, games, pumpkin painting and music while you browse more than 25 vendors and crafters at the Touch of Class 2nd Annual Fall Festival on October 5th. Revel in the fun of fall as you enjoy preparing for the coming holidays.
Fall is the best time to visit our nearby farms and experience the harvest season. Visit Grit’s Fun Farm and see the farm in its full glory. There are too many great things to do to list them all: corn bin, junior corn maze, a pumpkin patch, Slide Mountain, wagon rides, a corn slide, the tractor train, pumpkin bowling, a hay maze, tire mountain… and there are so many more! Find out why fall on the farm is a special time for everyone.
Or you can simply walk outside your Charleston apartment and look around you. As the leaves change and the light turns golden, everything around us becomes a work of art. It’s little wonder that the tourists are drawn here.
